5 Things to Consider When Choosing a Volunteer Event

Volunteering is awesome for your mental health and for your community as a whole! Do you know you want to start volunteering more regularly, but don’t know where to start? If that is the case, then this post is for you! Here are 5 things to consider when choosing a volunteer event:

1. Day and Time

The day and time of the event is the first thing to consider. Project Helping volunteer events repeat once or twice a month at the same day and time, this way it is easy for volunteers to attend the same events every month. Different events also take place on different days and times so that no matter your schedule, everyone can have the opportunity to volunteer. If you have flexibility during the week, then look for weekday events. If your weekends are free, then find events that take place on the weekends.

2. Type of Event

All volunteer events are open to adults, but a subset of events are part of the Kyndfulness for Kids program. These K4K events are geared towards providing kids and families with an opportunity to volunteer. Of course, these events are open to everyone, but they are designed to be more kid-friendly than the average event. If you have kids or teenagers who want to volunteer with you, K4K events could be a great fit for you!

3. The Impact

Every volunteer event gives you the opportunity to make a big impact on the community. Different events give you the opportunity to make different kinds of impacts. For example, at Treasure House of Hope you help bake bread to benefit the nonprofit, which allows them to help people get back on their feet. At Project C.U.R.E. you sort medical supplies that is sent abroad to help other countries; you don’t necessarily see the impact, but every item that you touch in that two hours will likely go on to save somebody’s life. Other events involve cooking and serving meals to those in need, which gives you the opportunity to make a difference in a person’s everyday life.

4. What You are Doing

Events can vary greatly by the activity that you will be doing. Many events involve cooking, so if you’re looking to work in the kitchen, then these events will be right up your alley. If you’re looking to get outside, you might enjoy events that involve farming or landscaping. Other events like Project C.U.R.E. and Clothes to Kids of Denver involve sorting items like medical supplies and clothes, so if sorting and organizing makes you feel relaxed, then you will love both these events! When choosing events, the trick is to sign up for events that involve activities that you already enjoy. This way, you are guaranteed to have a good time volunteering while doing good deeds for others.

5. The People

Every event has an awesome Kynd Leader who makes sure that the event goes well. If you already know someone who leads or if you click with someone you just met, consider signing up for the same events. Similarly, if you meet other volunteers who you click with, consider being volunteer buddies and signing up for events together. It is lots of fun to meet new people at events and even more fun to make new friends and build a support network from volunteering.
