Corebridge Financial spent several sessions building 170 Sight Words for First Graders kits, each one designed to help a young reader learn foundational words.
How it worked
The team gathered in person across multiple sessions, each running from 11:30 to 1:30 and including lunch. The group ran the build self-hosted, using a Project Helping intro video to introduce the cause and the kit before builders got started. Each participant assembled an individual kit, and every kit included a custom touch specific to Corebridge Financial. A Project Helping program manager set up the program in advance, confirmed the details, and made sure the kits arrived with everything needed and printed instructions included. Once the kits were finished, the team handled distribution themselves, taking the completed kits directly to first graders in their community.
The Sight Words for First Graders kits give young students the tools to build early reading skills and confidence with words they will see again and again in the classroom. Any team looking to combine a few hours of volunteering with a cause that supports local kids can run a program like this one.
